We had planned to celebrate my 45th birthday together in Singapore, a bucket list destination. My husband Steve, with business in Tokyo, was to meet me on Sentosa Island for a few days of indulgent experiences, including massages, Michelin-starred dining, and a heritage tour. I was packed and eager, ready to depart when Storm Fern struck, and my flight was canceled, pushing my departure to two and a half days later.

Disappointed, we agreed that a rushed trip for less than a day together in Singapore wasn’t worthwhile. Nevertheless, I resolved to go alone, although the idea felt daunting. As I navigated Singapore’s Changi Airport, a birthday greeting at immigration lifted my spirits. At my Capella hotel room, a cake awaited, yet its solitary presence was a stark reminder of Steve’s absence.

Despite the luxurious surroundings, my first solo meal felt bittersweet, the special tasting menu incomplete without him. The next day, I explored Singapore’s delights, from Hainanese chicken at a hawker center to boutique shopping. Although I confirmed my capability to explore independently, dining solo at Willow illuminated the ache of missing Steve’s company.

Capturing birdsong at night, I realized the trip’s emotional depth: some experiences are richer shared.
